Penny Howard has been busy dusting off her running shoes this week to start the serious part of her training for The Great North Run 2019. As a warmup she completed the York 10k at the weekend and is now full speed ahead on the last part of her training to make sure she smashes the 13.1 mile half marathon for the 12th time.
Funds raised are going towards our local charity, The Boot Shop, for an activity area in their back yard, giving them much needed additional space.
The Boot Shop is part of the national charity, United Response, which helps young people and adults with learning disabilities, autism and stress related illness. They offer a great community service where people come to take part in various activities ranging from crafts and cookery to drama, sports and furniture restoration. They encourage new skills and experiences and help people establish their identity and control over their lives. The emphasis is on responsibility and individuality.
Penny will be giving her all on September 8th. “Being my last Great North Run, it’s not about what time I make it over the finishing line, but about raising as much money as possible for this wonderful charity. They do so much for the community and are always coming up with new ideas for fun and worthwhile activities. People love going there.”
“ I hope businesses, friends and family will dig deep as I will be digging deep in those last few miles. What will keep me going is the thought of the people I am doing it for, which will definitely spur me on!”
